Sharmake Omar, a 30-year-old man of Somali descent, recorded the interaction in which Shiloh Hendrix hurled racial slurs at a five-year-old boy in a public park. Hendrix claimed that the child had taken an item from his baby's diaper bag and justified his use of the words as a response to the child's actions. In the video, Hendrix can be seen repeating the offensive words multiple times despite being reprimanded by Omar.
The video quickly spread on social media, sparking outrage and concern from various groups. The Rochester Police Department received numerous reports and immediately launched an investigation into the incident. By early May, the investigation was complete, and the findings were handed over to the Rochester City Attorney's Office for review and consideration of potential legal action.

After his identity was revealed, Hendrix launched a fundraising campaign on the GiveSendGo platform titled “Help Me Protect My Family,” claiming that he and his family had received threats and needed funds to move for their safety. Initially targeting $50,000, the campaign quickly surpassed its goal and reached over $600,000. However, the fundraising page also became a platform for racist and extremist comments, which eventually forced GiveSendGo to disable the comment feature.
